M. Balakirev
Islamei (Oriental Fantasy)
The programme starts with a miniature dialogue between Rossini’s Riens and Beethoven’s Bagatelles, which were composed during both composers’ late period, at a time when they were both extremely famous. Both groups of works share lots of humour, lightness together with a notable fantasy, originality and strong personality. The second half, based on folklore spirit, is a musical journey from the Mediterranean to Eastern Europe: Hatjidakis’ Ionian Suite (the first solo piano work written by the composer) is inspired by western classical music thus with notable influence from Greek tradition, while Constantinidis borrows purely traditional song and dance themes coming exclusively from the Dodecanese transcribed as miniatures in an original and appealing way. To conclude, Balakirev borrows two traditional themes from Circassian and Crimea to create a unique result: one of the most virutoso and particularly demanding pieces on piano repertoire, where folklore tradition is combined with brilliance and lyricism.
B) “Beethoven and Rossini: the Masters’ encounter”
L. v. Beethoven
Bagatelles Op.33
G. Rossini

Quelques Riens pour Album του Rossini από το Péchés de vieillesse: No. 10, 4, 15, 24
L. v. Beethoven
Bagatelles Op.126
Rondo Op.129 “Rage over a lost penny”
This is a musical “dialogue” between the two Masters, both of whom were extremely famous during their lives and they actually had the occasion to meet in person. Although there is a substantially different composition style between Beethoven and Rossini there is a connection between the works presented on the programme. The main theme here is actually the miniature and small musical form, to which both composers respond with great originality, ingenuity and obvious humorous mood. Beethoven’s brilliant and playful Bagatelles are on a dialogue with Rossini’s Riens full of irony and spirit, composed mainly to be performed in his private soirées. The little “Nothings” belong to Rossini’s last years production; same as Beethoven’s Bagatelles Op.126, main part of the second half of the recital proposed.
