“Fragmentary Dreams” invites listeners to traverse the delicate landscapes of memory, emotion, and imagination, much like fragments of dreams that ebb and flow, leaving traces of inspiration in their wake.
G. Rossini’s “Quelques Riens pour Album” opens our journey with a selection of charming miniatures (Nos. 1, 4, 10, 12, 21, and 6). Each piece is a delightful vignette that captures fleeting moments of joy and playfulness, setting the stage for the evocative narratives to follow. Rossini’s wit and elegance shine through, providing a perfect introduction to the themes of spontaneity and reminiscence.
The programme then takes a darker turn, transitioning into the lyrical realms of F. Schubert, where we encounter his hauntingly beautiful “Auf dem Wasser zu singen” paired with vividly expressive “Gretchen am Spinnrade” on Liszt’s version for piano solo. These works embody the fragility of dreams—a poignant balance of longing and desire, underscored by rich harmonic textures and flowing melodies that resonate with the listener’s own introspections.
As we delve deeper into the program, we are reminded that the year 2025 marks the centennial celebration of the births of two remarkable composers, M. Hatzidakis and M. Theodorakis. Hatzidakis’s “Ionian Suite for piano”, a fusion of classical and folk elements, transports us to sun-kissed landscapes and cultural echoes of Greece, resonating with a timeless charm that has endured through the decades. Each movement is a snapshot of vibrant life and ethereal beauty, inviting us into its rhythmic nuances and lyrical motifs. Similarly, M. Theodorakis’s “Sonatine for piano”, actually dedicated to Hatzidakis, captures the essence of fleeting moments, drawing connections between the everyday and the profound, presenting both a resonant and contemplative experience.
The recital culminates in R. Schumann’s “Carnaval Op.9,” a sweeping tapestry of masked identities and vivid characters, a “dream sequence” where the pianist conjures up a kaleidoscope of figures and moods. The music is full of humor, irony, and wit, with moments of tenderness and pathos.

J. C. Bach: Sonata Op.17, No.2 in C minor
L. v. Beethoven: Bagatelles Op.126
F. Liszt: Ballade No.2, S.171
Y. Constantinidis: From 22 Songs and dances from Dodecanese (No.1, 13, 4-5, 9, 8, 10-11)
M. Balakirev: Islamei (Fantaisie orientale)
“Echoes of emotion” intertwines the emotional depth of Western classical music with the enchanting traditions and melodies of the East, creating a rich tapestry of sound.
We begin with J.C. Bach’s “Sonata Op. 17, No. 2 in C minor,” a piece that embodies the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era. Its dramatic contrasts and lyrical themes provide a powerful foundation for our journey, allowing the listener to feel the weight of each emotional echo as the music unfolds with both tension and grace.
Following this, we delve into L. v. Beethoven’s “Bagatelles Op. 126.” These charming yet introspective pieces, with their succinct forms and rich emotional content, invite us to explore the subtleties of human sentiment. Each bagatelle serves as a reflective moment, capturing the essence of fleeting emotions—a hallmark of Beethoven’s profound artistic vision.
As we transition into the Romantic era, F. Liszt’s “Ballade No. 2, S. 171” transports us into a world of passionate intensity and lyrical beauty. This piece, steeped in narrative depth, weaves together moments of turmoil and serenity, allowing the pianist to express a wide range of feelings and colors, echoing the complexities of the human spirit.
Next, we journey to the enchanting sounds of the Dodecanese Islands with Y. Constantinidis’s “From 22 Songs and Dances from Dodecanese.” Through selected pieces (No. 1, 13, 4-5, 9, 8, 10-11), we encounter the vibrant musical heritage of Greek folk traditions. These selections highlight the interconnection between culture and emotion, inviting the listener to experience the joy, nostalgia, and richness of the Mediterranean soundscape.
Finally, we arrive at M. Balakirev’s “Islamei (Fantaisie orientale),” a stunning showcase of Eastern influences and technical prowess. This work distills the essence of Orientalism through its intricate melodies and rhythmic complexity, leading us into a world of exotic beauty and emotional depth. Balakirev’s captivating harmonies allow the listener to feel the lush landscapes and profound feelings inherent in Eastern music traditions.
Together, these works create an immersive experience that celebrates the profound emotional spectrum found within classical and Oriental music. “Echoes of Emotion” promises to resonate deeply within each listener, as we explore the interconnected themes of love, longing, joy, and reflection. Join us for this unique journey, where echoes of the past meet the vibrancy of the present, and every note carries the weight of emotion.
